Your Guide to Fall Color Destinations in Michigan

We all know that Michigan fall foliage is spectacular, and our state has the rankings to prove it! We were ranked #4 by LawnStarter last year and the UP just got a #2 ranking from USA Today as a fall destination. With an average of 12 weeks of fall colors that spread from the UP to Detroit, there is a large window to see them all over the state. Below is our guide to the best fall color destinations in Michigan.

The Porcupine Mountains

Of course, we have to start with a spot in the UP! While our mountains don’t compare to the height of those out West, the Porcupine Mountains are just as scenic! They are covered in forests that become brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows in the fall. Add in the various lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, and you have some of the most picturesque fall scenery. The most famous scene from Porcupine Mountains has to be Lake of the Clouds, which is just stunning in fall, but there are numerous other trails and sites to see in this 60,000-acre state park! There are miles of trails, camping, chair lifts, and even an 18-hole disc golf course.

Tahquamenon Falls

One of the most iconic fall scenes, you’ve probably seen thousands of pictures of the Upper Falls during autumn. While beautiful any time of year, it becomes especially breathtaking with the fall foliage. Don’t forget to explore the lower falls as well for more picture perfect scenes! There are multiple overlooks for all of the waterfalls to give you various angles, and miles of trails to just take in the UP forests. Add this one to your fall color bucket list!

Tunnel of Trees

Another iconic spot in Michigan! This 20 mile stretch on Hwy 119 between Harbor Springs and Cross Village. The spot of 119 winds it’s way through forests that crowd the road making for more a breathtaking drive! There are also numerous spots where there are views of Lake Michigan. If you’re someone who can’t pay attention when driving past pretty things, make sure you have someone else drive! A fun detour on your way back or up to the UP!

The Dragon Trail

We might be a bit biased, but one of the reasons we love The Dragon Trail is because of the beautiful scenery while you’re riding! In the fall, this beautiful scenery is just magnified. Hike or bike to some of the amazing overlooks and admire the fall colors surrounding Hardy Dam Pond. The perfect place for a day trip! Visit some of the amazing food places in the area as well!

M-22

Another iconic and scenic drive in Michigan! M-22 starts just east of Manistee and heads north around the whole “pinky” of Michigan, passing through places like Arcadia, Frankfort, Empire, Glen Arbor, Leland, Sutton’s Bay, and ending near Traverse City. It’s the perfect little road trip for an extended weekend! There are tons of sites to see in this area like Sleeping Bear Dunes, Torch Lake, and Point Betsie. If you time it right, you may even get a chance to see the Northern lights which appear more frequently above the 45th parallel.

Get out and enjoy those beautiful Michigan fall colors, even if it’s just in your backyard! There are hundreds more trails and scenic spots in Michigan that can help you escape the busy world and embrace the beauty of nature! Stay active out there and keep exploring no matter the season!
